Laptop Ensemble

My role as assistant director of Laptop Ensemble started in the Spring of 2019. I had been a member of the ensemble for a few years at this point. The director, Martin Herman, was going to be in the UK serving as the music director for a musical. In the month he was away, he asked me to step in as director. The concert that semester was under my direction, where I rehearsed the ensemble and built the majority of patches used for it. The following semester I was asked to take the role of assistant director where I was put in charge of teaching Max and keeping track of the ensemble’s equipment. Under my tenure, I revamped our curriculum and redesigned our inventory system. I concentrated on practicality in Max. Instead of teaching the basics of the program from the ground up, I decided to teach what was relevant to writing music for the ensemble. My curriculum was very successful in getting the new members up to speed with the software.

We champion collaboration and having a member-led ensemble. Most of our repertoire is composed and workshopped by the members of the ensemble. Check out a collection of our most recent concerts below.
